THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS fell during that dark period in Cindy’s life. They were just days. There wasn’t anything special about either of them. She imagined having a family Christmas someday. She planned her Thanksgiving dinner and thought about the presents she would buy for Christmas and how she would wrap them. It was a fantasy, a dream she knew would never come true.

She had been separated from Nick for 11 weeks. It was different this time. It wasn’t like the other separations when there had been hope. This time there was finality to it. If she lost Nick, he would never know how much she loved him. In desperation, she sent Nick an email the next morning.

Nick,

I’ll be in Denver on Friday. I’m visiting our distribution center. Can we have lunch either Friday or Saturday? I’d love to see you and talk. I have some things I need to say. Please call me or email me and let me know if you’re willing to meet with me. I hope we can get together.

Cindy

Cindy carried her cellphone with her everywhere she went that day, even to the bathroom, hoping Nick would call. She was in her office at home when the phone rang. She answered before the second ring.

“Nick, thanks for calling.” She began talking before either of them said hello. Cindy had only one thing on her mind. “Nick, please meet me so we can talk. I’ll even come to Basalt.”

“I’ll meet you in Denver tomorrow. Will you be done with your work?”

“I’m done now. I stayed over hoping I’d have a chance to see you.”

“Where are you staying?”

“The Residence Inn in Littleton.”

“If you would, reserve a room for me, too. I don’t want to drive back at night. I should be there around 11. I’ll call you after I check in.”

“Thanks Nick. This means a lot to me. That sounds pretty uninspired, but it’s the best I can come up with right now. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I’ll be there. I’m glad we’ll have a chance to talk. I’m sure we each have some things to say.”

They wished each other well and hung up, anticipating what the next day might bring.

Nick had agreed to meet Cindy so he could tell her he wanted out of what little remained of their friendship. Friendship? Hell, it had turned into a relationship the first time they were together in Denver. He had to deliver his message in person, not in an email or over the phone. She deserved more than that.

It was easy for Nick to assume that Cindy wanted to meet to apologize and resume their relationship. It was equally possible she wanted to meet to terminate it. He would find out soon.

Nick arrived at the Residence Inn at five minutes after 11. He was startled to see Cindy in the lobby.

She had been waiting since 10:30, although she didn’t tell Nick that. “I just got here 10 minutes ago,” she said. “Nick, I’ve missed you. You look good.”

“You do, too.” What an understatement, he thought.
